Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. In her early years, Ruth Roman's carnival-barker father passed away, which made her mother Mary Pauline (Gold) to work as a waitress or cleaner to help them survive. Ruth grew up in the tenement area of poverty in Boston, Massachusetts, where she went to school. The institution she was in just two years later in order to pursue a career as an actor. Her path was not without obstacles. While in New York, her first assignment was to shoot stills for crime magazines. the theatre work that she longed for was not available. Following a short time as a club hat girl and a club hat girl, she made the decision to go to her home in Massachusetts and leave the job she was working in. It was there that she earned a living as an usherette by in the daytime, while at night she performing with the New England Repertory Company. It was her first job as an actor. Drama studies led her to graduate in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
